When I was a kid, my dad used to let me watch boxing. My mother was not happy about her baby watching, what was at that time, the most violent thing on television. But my dad was really big on the “sweet science” and wanted me to learn to appreciate all of the aspects of the sport. Fast forward 30 years…
This Saturday night we will all have the chance to witness boxing history in the making. Two of the arguably greatest fighters of all time are finally going to meet each other in the ring. You’ll be able to witness it all on Verizon FiOS…Â Saturday, May 2, live on Pay-Per-View.
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is currently undefeated as a pro and is a five-division World Champion, having won 10 world titles and the lineal championship in four different weight classes. Mayweather is a two-time Ring magazine Fighter of the Year (winning the award in 1998 and 2007); he also won the Best Fighter ESPY Award in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2014. Mayweather is the WBA and WBC champion. The Ring magazine welterweight champion and the WBC Super, WBA, and Ring junior middle weight champion. He is also rated the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
Emmanuel “Manny” Dapidran Pacquiao is the first and only eight-division World Champion in which he has won ten world titles, as well as the first to win the lineal championship in four different weight classes. He was named “Fighter of the Decade” for the 2000s (decade) by the Boxing Writers Association of America, World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO). He is the current WBO welterweight champion and is currently ranked number three on The Ring pound-for-pound list.
