This blog post is part of a paid Megan Media and Petco’s Wholehearted Dog Food blogging program. The opinions and idea expressed are my own.
Grain-free food is the way to go for any dog, not just dogs with food allergies or sensitivities.
That’s because dogs weren’t made to eat grain. Think about it. Dogs are the ancestors of wolves. When’s the last time you saw a wolf snacking on a wheat stalk on Nova? Exactly. Dogs are carnivores, only getting carbs from the contents of their prey’s stomachs.
Grain-Free Dog Food for Better Health
The reason so many dogs have food allergies and sensitivities is because they’ve been eating grain in their dog food for so long. Again, dogs are carnivores, wheat and other grains are not on their menu.
In fact, ingredients like grain are only used in dog foods to make them cheaper to make. They are in no way used for their health benefits, which are exactly zero. That’s right. Wheat and other grains are a big fat goose egg in the health department.
That’s why every dog should be on a grain-free diet. Grain-free diets are superior, because they only have ingredients which are made for a dog’s digestive system. This means better health, because their systems aren’t bombarded with things that their bodies have no idea what to do with.
The Low Down on Grain-Free Dog Food
Grain-free food, as the name says, is completely free of the major offenders when it comes to ingredients which are 100% unnecessary in a dog’s diet like:
- Wheat
- Soy
- Corn
- Gluten
Instead, grain-free foods focus on protein as the main ingredient with carb sources like: sweet potato, potato, brown rice or oatmeal (the two exceptions to grain) and peas. These ingredients are easily digestible and are perfect for a dog’s digestive tract.
The one unfortunate drawback of grain-free dog food is how expensive it can be. Which makes sense, when you think about it. If fillers like grain are used to make the production of dog food cheaper, then making it without those ingredients will make it more pricey.
