This year’s Academy Awards race was surrounded by controversy. But, there were some really great performances and films that didn’t go unrecognized. I made a list of which films peaked my interest and I’ve decided that I’m going to watch these Academy Award winners on Verizon FiOS.
Alicia Vikander -Â The Danish Girl (Best Supporting Actress)
With support from his loving wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander), artist Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) prepares to undergo one of the first sex-change operations.
Vikander had a big year with 2015, including her break out role in Ex-Machina. But it was this role that cemented her as one of the most talented young actresses in Hollywood.
Mark Rylance – Bridge Of Spies (Best Supporting Actor)
During the Cold War, the Soviet Union captures U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down his U-2 spy plane. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, Powers’ only hope is New York lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks), recruited by a CIA operative to negotiate his release. Donovan boards a plane to Berlin, hoping to win the young man’s freedom through a prisoner exchange. If all goes well, the Russians would get Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), the convicted spy who Donovan defended in court.
Mark Rylance is a much lauded stage actor who alot of people had never heard of. Between his Oscar win and a role in Steven Spielberg’s next movie, The BFG. He is going to become a familiar face to moviegoers.
Spotlight -Â Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay
In 2001, editor Marty Baron of The Boston Globe assigns a team of journalists to investigate allegations against John Geoghan, an unfrocked priest accused of molesting more than 80 boys. Led by editor Walter “Robby” Robinson (Michael Keaton), reporters Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo), Matt Carroll and Sacha Pfeiffer interview victims and try to unseal sensitive documents. The reporters make it their mission to provide proof of a cover-up of abuse within the Roman Catholic Church.
This is one of those rare films that is perfect from beginning to end. The material is a bit hard to take in, but the performances, writing and direction are impeccable.
With Verizon FiOS On Demand, you can finally watch those Academy Award winners and nominees without leaving the comfort of home. Or, if you’re always on the go… Watch them on the My FiOS App.
