For anyone who has experienced losing a loved one to cancer, there is a emptiness inside of you that is hard to explain. I see the people who bravely battle cancer as true modern day warriors. Taking on a battle that you might not win and facing it head on. The more funds that can be raised to find a cure for this disease, the better. We need to beat cancer and Coaches vs. Cancer is one of those great organizations that is trying to help. They are beating cancer one shot at a time.
Last year, I lost my beautiful mother to cancer. The last few weeks were the toughest. Seeing a vibrant, funny, brilliant woman slowly fade away was a heart-breaking thing to watch. I was so angry with it all. I wanted to be mad about a lot of things, but the one thing that made me the angriest was cancer itself. Every day I miss my mom. Sometimes I pick up the phone to call her and for a split second I think she is going to pick up. Then it hits me… She’s not going to pick up.
Coaches vs. Cancer
Over the last year, I’ve been giving money to different organizations and one that I really am happy to be involved with is Coaches vs. Cancer.  It’s a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Coaches nationwide are sharing their personal experiences, using community leadership, and promoting healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs. Since 1993, coaches have raised over $100 million for the American Cancer Society.
“Come and Play for Usâ€
For the month of February, Coaches vs. Cancer will run its 3-Point Challenge. Fans (or anyone for that matter) can pledge to donate for every 3-pointer their favorite basketball teams make at 3PointChallenge.org. Teams can be matched up against their rival schools to see who can raise the most funds from their 3-point shots. The fans will be able to follow the leaderboard to see who will become the Coaches vs. Cancer 3-Point Challenge Champion.
My family and I will be making a pledge this year in honor of the one-year anniversary of my Mom’s passing. It is bittersweet. But I know that it would make her smile.
