I’ve been a movie fan my whole life and one of my favorite genres to watch is horror. As a kid, getting REALLY scared by a movie was a right of passage. These days, I still love watching scary movies and one of the best outlets to see the latest horror films or reintroduce yourself to some old ones, is Netflix.
The fact that Halloween is right around the corner, inspired me to search for the Top 5 Horror Films on Netflix… Â Here they are, in no particular order.
1. Evil Dead 2 (1987, Unrated) – Director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell push the envelope in this brilliant gore fest. Part slapstick comedy, part amusement park ride, this film delivers scares and laughs at a breakneck pace. This movie took the horror-comedy genre to a whole different level.
2. You’re Next (2011, Rated R) -Â When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped… until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all. This movie puts the horror/revenge picture on its ear. The first time I saw it, I nearly spent the whole movie jumping out of my seat.
3. Fright Night (1985, Rated R) -Â For young Charlie Brewster, nothing could be better than an old horror movie late at night. When a vampire decides to move in next door, the only one who can help him hunt them down is washed-up actor, Peter Vincent, who hosts Charlie’s favorite TV show, Fright Night. This is an entry into the vampire genre that doesn’t disappoint. It’s got some great scares!
4. Carrie (1976, Rated R) -Â A young, abused and timid 17-year-old girl discovers she has telekinesis, and gets pushed to the limit on the night of her school’s prom by a humiliating prank. This 70’s creep fest is one of the best Stephen King film adaptations, primarily due to some great directing by Brian DePalma and a cast that delivers on every level. This one will force you to sleep with the lights on.
5. Re-Animator (1985, Unrated) -Â A dedicated student at a medical college and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue when an odd new student arrives on campus. Based on a H.P. Lovecraft story, this movie keeps up its campy mood throughout, but once the gore starts up… Watch Out!!! It is definitely not for the squeamish.
Get some friends together and have a Netflix Scare-a-Thon Party. You never know, it might become a yearly ritual from now on!
Everybody Have A Safe And Happy Halloween!!!
